Answer: The Whales of Guerrero Research Project (WGRP) was launched in 2013 to study the marine ecology of Southwest Pacific Mexico - in particular its poorly known humpback whale populations - and to use this charismatic flagship species to engage and empower local communities in the state of Guerrero through training, ecotourism development, education and outreach activities. WGRP is working on a first ever five-year field study of humpback whales and dolphins in the region. This research, done in collaboration with numerous international scientific partners, serves as the backbone of our local education and capacity building work. Americas first ocean NGO, Oceanic Society, serves as our principle international partner and fiscal sponsor, and brings volunteers and eco-travelers to our project, and also hosts our successful online whale adoption program. We believe that in order for an improvement in marine conservation to occur, the entire community must be invested in the monitoring and protection efforts. As such, we collect data in partnership with the local community, using only local staff and resources. We train tour guides and fishermen to collect rigorous scientific data alongside our research team, conduct targeted community outreach, collaborate with community leaders, provide after-school workshops and US-Mexico cultural exchange programs, print publications and maps for tourists and community members and conduct global outreach. We make all our results publicly available and collaborate with Cascadia Research Collective, NOAA, IWC, IUCN, and a number of esteemed university science programs in Mexico to ensure the greatest impact of our work. We have delivered tangible results since beginning our work in the area, and have already had a noteworthy impact on local communities, among whom we are a well-known and welcome partner.
