Answer: The Black Swan Academy (BSA) is a nonprofit organization operating year-round after school programs in DC Public Schools, focused on improving life outcomes for black youth through Civic Learning and Engagement. Our mission is to EMPOWER under-served black youth through civic learning and engagement, giving them a comprehensive set of TOOLS needed to SUCCEED in life and become active SOCIAL CATALYST in their communities. BSA operates an innovative Civic Learning and Engagement Program (out-of-school-time, year-round) at Anacostia High School, and Sousa Middle School in Southeast, DC, serving 60 youth. Lesson plans are aligned with Common Core Stands to promote academic achievement and use applied learning, as well service learning techniques to help participants: 1.) Restore PRIDE in Self 2.) Identify PURPOSE through Community Service and, 3.) Recognize innate POWER to impact positive social change.
