Answer: The Taxpayers Association of Central Iowa was created in 1921 under the name “Polk Des Moines Taxpayers Association.” It exists to foster more efficient and effective local government in the Greater Des Moines area through independent research, education, advocacy and community leadership. In doing so, the organization contributes to a strong quality of life at an affordable cost. The goals are to be: - A trusted and visible source of information for taxpayers about local government financial issues and local government performance; - A strong source of support for local officials in identifying and pursuing opportunities that promote efficiency; - A leader in moving intergovernmental cooperative efforts that result in better service for less cost; and - A viable association with engaged members and monetary support sufficient to carry out the mission. In 2011, the Association expanded its geography to include Dallas and Warren Counties. It adopted new by-laws and established a new Board consisting of several long-time members together with a cadre of newly involved top business executives who believe in the importance of the mission. Membership consists primarily of businesses and interested individuals. Individuals who have previously served in public office or as public administrators are especially welcome because of their knowledge and understanding of how to be effective in the role of an independent third party.
