Answer: Sustain Music and Nature is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit based out of the Northeast US (NY/CT). Sustain envisions the music industry as a leader in promoting environmental responsibility and awareness, and we work towards this vision by partnering the music industry with environmental organizations and resources. Sustain runs two primary programs: Songscapes and Green Roster Songscapes, are songwriting retreats for bands on public lands. Since its creation in the spring of 2015, Sustain has produced three retreats, partnering most recently with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Wyoming. Through these retreats, bands write a song inspired by their stay on these unique public lands. The song is then professionally recorded and released on major streaming and distribution services, alongside a music video featuring the landscape that inspired the song. The goal of Songscapes is to create new audiences for public lands and bands through existing fan-bases. The funds from song sales are split between Sustain, the band and the land organization. The second program that Sustain runs is a certification-based community called Green Roster. Similar to the Fair Trade concept, this program is composed of studios, bands, and luthiers that pledge to uphold environmental practices in their businesses. Once they sign the Green Roster pledge, and agree to community guidelines for green practices, members are granted use of the Green Roster stamp, and must work towards reaching self-determined environmental goals. The stamp is a brand that denotes members commitment to the environment, and its hoped that someday it may drive consumers to seek out Green Roster member products and services. In exchange for joining Green Roster, members are granted access to promotional tools, and special community discounts.
