Answer: Read to Me Project is addressing the root cause of most societal issues - low literacy. In Monterey County alone, 70% of children begin kindergarten unprepared. They are entering school as much as two years behind in language, vocabulary, and cognitive knowledge. Imagine a 5 year old starting kindergarten with the knowledge and language skills of a 3 year old! Far too many children NEVER catch up in school leading to frustrations and struggles in later years. In fact, among these children are: 25% more likely to drop out 60% more likley to never attend college 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. The Read to Me Project preventatively and remedially addresses the problem head on and has been making progress since 2011. The program helps under-served children achieve kindergarten readiness and a lifetime of literacy by empowering school age brothers and sisters to read to their young siblings at home. Read to Me Project also works with parents, reaching them through organizations and companies with built-in access to caregivers and parents of young children. Literacy is the foundation for equity and a lifetime of greater opportunities.
