Answer: PrisonCare, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization helping equip compassionate people to "adopt" a prison, teaching them how to offer support to incarcerated individuals via pen pal encourager relationships, provide mental wellness resources to those who request them, and offer personal improvement coaching, while ALSO supporting Correctional Officers and other staff or administrators via appreciation events and mental wellness support. Unlike other prison-focused non-profits -- ministries, reform initiatives, advocacy organization, or abolitionists -- PrisonCare sees a neighborhood inside the razor wire: an uneasy neighborhood made up of residents, officers, staff, and administrators. We equip volunteers using a model that supports ALL the neighbors inside by helping to reduce the negative, "us vs. them" environment behind the fence. Your politics don't matter in PrisonCare-- people from every political flavor will agree that NO ONE wants to be inside a prison, and for good reason. The toxic environment harms everyone inside, no matter which uniform they wear. PrisonCare wants to help change that, leaving space for concerned people with differing opinions about prison reform to still work side by side with compassion. By focusing on the use of virtues-based language and a relational style of communication, PrisonCare's encouragement is accessible to prison residents who are not comfortable with a faith-based worldview. Churches can still use the PrisonCare model with great success (the first PrisonCare Compassion Team was born in a church community, in fact!), so can student groups, veterans organizations, and more. Ask Sabrina to speak to your group about a personal, flexible, and holistic way to encourage culture change inside a prison, even while prison reform still feels a long way off!
