Answer: Established in 1998, Opportunity Neighborhood serves over 3,550 low-income children and families living in large affordable housing communities throughout the Twin Cities metro. Each affordable housing community is unique in its population, location and service needs. In partnership with the resident population, we identify programs and services that best meet the needs of their community. Programs and services are then developed through partnerships with local schools, law enforcement agencies and other community organizations. When there is a service need, but no available community partnership, we create programming based on best practice research and utilize appropriately trained staff. Our 15 years of experience, in addition to research and best practice data, reveal safe and supportive affordable housing communities have a combination of 6 components: early childhood education, out-of-school time/early intervention, courtesy, information and referral, community events and special initiatives. These 6 components support our 3 overall goals for each community we serve: increase community safety, increase housing stability and increase opportunities for family success.
