Answer: MCAP's primary work is to provide children who are victims of abuse, neglect, and trafficking with their own specially-trained and compassionate attorney advocate. This work is critical to vulnerable children without it, they might be on their own in the complex, confusing, and frightening legal process. While the District Attorney (DA) handles cases of child abuse, they represent the county, not the child. While defendants in cases of child abuse are provided with free representation by the Public Defender, children are not required to be provided with an attorney who will advocate for them and them alone. MCAP was founded in 2004 to provide Montgomery Countys child victims with the free legal representation and access to justice they had been lacking. In our 17 years of operation, MCAP has served more than 8,000 children.
