Answer: Christi Center was founded in 1987 by Susan and Don Cox after their daughter, Christi, was killed by a drunk driver. After her death, they found few affordable resources in the Austin community for families who were grieving a death loss. Many in their lives expected them to "move on" and "get over it" - only others who had experienced similar losses understood that their lives were irrevocably changed. They began convening support groups to help families adjust to a new life after the death of a loved one. Our mission: to offer hope after the death of a loved one by providing support networks, community education, and therapeutic activities that are free, peer-based, and ongoing. What we do: we offer free, ongoing, grief support groups a month at our locations in Austin and Georgetown. We serve ages 5 to adult, with loss-specific groups for loss of a child, loss of a spouse, mixed adult loss (parents, siblings, friends, etc.), loss to crime, loss to overdose, loss to suicide, veterans, a men's group, a mother's group, kids (ages 5-12), and teens (13-19). We also partner with local schools to offer groups onsite during the school day.
