Answer: Black Youth Leadership Project (BYLP) was established in 1999 at the State Capitol as a way to introduce Black students to the Legislative process. Our mission has evolved holistically to include establishing, developing, and implementing educational programs for Black youth in areas of leadership development, youth empowerment, academic success, emotional intelligence, media development, cultural awareness, and identity. While our primary focus remains centered in civic participation, Our community needs services in areas where gaps in the continuum of care exist. We unapologetically serve Black youth and families who have historically been marginalized. Although our target demographic identifies as Black/African American, we support all families who are dealing with issues of belongingness, mental health/wellbeing and educational challenges as they navigate the k-12 system. By functioning to extend knowledge of policy issues and policy-making through a combination of experiential and academic education, participants will gain firsthand experience in many aspects of the Legislative process including: Policy Development & Implementation, Public Speaking and Executive-Legislative Relations. BYLPs goals are to: Introduce youth to the legislative process Assist youth in developing more effective communication, cognition, language and leadership skills Encourage the importance of public service at an early age Educate youth regarding the active process of democracy
