Answer: Buccaneer Board Riders was created because owner Matt Stone wanted to push the limits of an already existing industry. He wanted to create a truly core line for Surfers by Surfers. His whole intent was to service the hardcore surfing community. One day while sitting in the parking lot of the Newport Chip and Putt with longtime friend Cordell Miller, of Cordell surfboards, the two discussed the new surf concept. Cordell suggested Matt create a new baby. After a couple pots of coffee and looking at a stack of surfer magazines, the first concepts came to life. If you shoved Blackbeard, Kelly Slater, Wave Warriors (the movie), and Adam and the Ants into a cannon those first designs are what came out and BBR was born. Matt Stone was a Pro Surfer, Tall Ship Sailor, and Apparel Designer, who grew up in and around the Surf Industry. His parents were one of the original founders of Ocean Pacific (OP) Surfwear. Matt studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Growing up in Newport Beach and around the hub of the Surf Industry, he felt that he wanted to approach his education in fashion differently than his predecessors. His objective was to gain practical experience in the high-end Fashion Industry. He worked at companies such as Calvin Klein, Dana Buchman, and Donna Karen. Based on some early success and wise investment, Matt found himself with a choice. He decided to head back to the beach and founded Buccaneer Board Riders (BBR) Surfwear in 2009. It is his goal to create with a pirate heart and mentality. At BBR we want to push the limits of design, and expression, for the way you ride and live. BBR’s goal is to push you to express yourself as well and to be a part of a surfing community that stands for freedom. BBR is not just a surf brand, it’s a lifestyle, where surfers, sailors, and board riders come together to rebel against monotony… and ride some AWESOME waves. Freedom, Adventure, and Self Expression is the BBR Mantra.
