Inspired by the life and music of the legendary Charles Neville, the mission of Blues to Green is to utilize music and other arts to center the cultures of the African diaspora within American culture, nurture personal freedom, strengthen multicultural community, and catalyze action for racial, economic, and climate justice in Springfield, MA and beyond. Blues to Green runs the free annual Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival, which brings local and national artists to the city every summer for music of the African diaspora, workshops and talks on the musics cultural context and links to racial and climate justice, and family activities. The festival also brings hundreds of thousands in economic stimulus to Springfield. Learn more at springfieldjazzfest.org. Another Blues to Green program, the Legacy Education Project, brings award-winning Black and Afro-Caribbean musicians into majority Latinx and Black public schools to use historical Black community music as a vehicle to teach music, history, and literature while inspiring students creativity and positive self-image. The musicians share their music, stories, and cultural heritage through both in-school residencies and videos being developed for an online, downloadable version of the program.
