Answer: Annas Pals is a non-profit with a mission statement of improving the lives of hospitalized children and their families. Currently we bring provide a take out dinner once a month for all the patients at Boston Childrens Hospital on the Blood Disorder Floor, as well as bringing in games, snacks, child friendly sheets and activities. In October 2014, fifteen year old Anna Jerome lost her year and a half long battle with Leukemia. Anna received a bone marrow transplant as part of her treatment. A bone marrow transplant wipes out a bodys immune system, leaving the patient unable to fight infection. After the transplant is complete, patients must remain immunosuppressed in order for the new marrow to graft without the body rejecting the new organ. Immunocompromised patients must remain in isolation in order to limit the amount of contaminants they are exposed to. This isolation, coupled with the physical and psychological struggle of having a serious illness, can be extremely detrimental to emotional well being of the patient, in particular, a pediatric patient. While Anna struggled through this illness, it was discovered that there is not a facility specifically designed to meet the needs of an immunocompromised patient. There was not a place where kids, with these type of limitations, can go to spend time with family or friends. We are currently working on a project for immunocompromised patients. The project involves purchasing beachfront property with in an hour from the Boston Longwood area and constructing cottages which would be safe for pediatric patients with no immune system, the inability to fight off germs. These patients are confined to their homes, without visitors, for months at a time. Our BEACH HOUSE would allow an escape from the isolation, and give them an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. The goal is to have the patients, who have had a horrific medical experience, spend time being kids and enjoy time with family and friends.
